I discovered Homer’s Odyssey when I was seven, finding the book in my sister Ginny’s bedroom and being immediately hooked by the adventures of the Greek hero Odysseus.
Many years later, just as I was about to go to Greece for a year’s work, I was given a book of poems by CP Cavafy (Kavafis), the Greek poet, which included this one, probably his most famous. It describes our search for home, the long journey through life until one finds peace. Years later still, I can pin the poem to the door of my house in Magura. How do I know this is home? Simple – I don’t want to leave it, not even to go shopping. I’m happy here, and need no more.
