The long and winding road

Like Marmite and Mr Bean, the road up to Măgura is a thing one loves or hates. The only people who can be indifferent have lived here all their lives and have not experienced other, more feasible roads. The M25, for instance, the Transfăgărășan, or the Karakoram Highway. I love it and hate it in equal measure; my visitors fall into one camp or the other.

My cousin Vicki loathed it. ‘I don’t know how you can stand this,’ she said through her gritted teeth as went we plunged into another pothole and she hit her head on the car roof again…
